We start with a flashback, Gilbert and Violet meeting for the first time.
Then we go back to the present where Violet is learning how to type, then type more quietly, then try to write letters for people. Typing isn’t a problem for her but she has trouble communicating what the client really wanted in her letter.
To be fair though, you’d need some really good people skills to figure out what this woman really wanted. She wanted to play hard-to-get with this suitor and Violet took her literally.
Erica’s motivations were really interesting here. She writes a letter that isn’t how a client wanted (in his case she made him contrite and apologetic when he wasn’t) but ultimately she wants to be a novelist and reach people emotionally with her writing.
