Violet goes to a class for Dolls. She does really well with accuracy and other factors but actually writing empathetic or sympathetic letters is difficult for her. Mostly she writes them in terms of status reports.
But she makes a friend, Luculia, in class. Luculia has a brother who fought in the war, blames himself for their parents’ deaths, drinks a lot, and brawls. Violet is able to help her express her true feelings with a short and simple letter.
There is definitely a strong argument to be made for expressing yourself in simple terms but has Violet really learned what she needs to become a Doll?
